Let’s start our Australian drive in the southeast. Stay a while in Canberra, a great “outdoors” town with lots to do. In Sydney, visit the Bondi and Manly Beaches; nearby Darling Harbor has the Sydney Aquarium and Wildlife World. Outside Sydney, visit the wineries of the Hunter Valley. If you’re a skier, drive into the Snowy Mountains for the Perisher Valley and Thredbo ski resorts.
Drive north along the east coast. Or, because of the easy availability of a cheap campervan rental in Brisbane, it can be a great starting point. This region is Queensland, with the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, where you’ll find great surfing at Surfers Paradise, Noosa and Mooloolaba. For divers, the Great Barrier Reef stretches all along the sea coast — stop at any of the towns you find along the way, like Townsville, Airlie Beach or Cairns, and stay for the diving.
You can reach the Australian Outback by many paths. But, the best way is from the Northern Territory and Darwin. A highway runs south from Darwin all the way to Adelaide on the south coast — you can get off at whatever point you fancy. With many providers of motorhome rental, Darwin is also a great alternative to Sydney as a starting point. Alice Springs, in the center of Australia, is the gateway for a day trip to Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock.
Western Australia is huge and spectacular. To the north is the beach city of Broome, and to the south, the cosmopolitan city of Perth. Drive from one to the other and stop at the wineries along the Margaret River. Explore the western forests of Jarrah and Karri in the Pemberton region. Outside Perth, go see the wineries in the Swan Valley. Drive east from Perth to explore the desert mining town of Kalgoorlie.
Continuing east along the south coast, the city of Adelaide in South Australia has gorgeous scenic views of the sea. Inland, visit the wineries in the Barossa Valley. The Flinders Ranges are another entry-point to the Outback.
Further east, Victoria and the city of Melbourne are Australian culture centers for music and art. Outside the city, drive to Mount Buffalo, Mount Butler and Mount Hotham to the north. Take a drive along the Great Ocean Road to see the beautiful seacoast.
The island of Tasmania is south of Melbourne across the Bass Strait; take your motorhome across on a ferry. The scenery is wild and windswept. Fishing, hiking, biking, and diving are all mainstays here.
